Here are the results of the LinkedIn poll on job growth that I started December
17, 2009. Thanks to everyone who responded.
2010 job
growth discussions have really heated up since Q3-Q4 2009. Speaking with many
peers and business leaders, despite a slow pick-up to the overall economy, most
predict growth in Q2. This poll helps validate that belief which means
employers need to worry not only about filling jobs, but retention.
My
prediction is that many companies will continue to rely on the “be happy you
have a job” mentality and overlook strong performers who are looking for a
change either because the work is no longer challenging, there are no financial
or promotion opportunities or the work environment seems beyond help. This will
add fuel to a better job market.
For job
seekers, this is a good time to get prepared. Either freshen up your networking
connections or résumé to get a head start in 2010, or be prepared to leverage opportunities
that open as others leave.
Of course
this isn’t a scientific or formal poll – but it’s certainly a pulse. Notice
that a good number of folks don’t see any growth. Whatever your position is, as
an individual or as an employer, it’s best to be smart about your options
regardless of how things turn out.
