The war for talent these days might feel more like a race to contain and/or
attract the Gen Y crowd. While establishing a solid bench or younger worker is
vital to invigorating company growth, so is the wisdom that comes from workers
with a demonstrated experience in running a business.
For the experienced
or “mature” job seeker (roughly pegged at 45 years old plus), the opportunities
to offer a lifetime of accomplishments and discipline to employers feels like a
cold, hard iron door – with locks and barricades preventing entry. The job environment
is not as friendly to this labor pool which is especially difficult when many
in this group will never utter the words “retirement,” and have more energy and
ideas than many workers half their age.
To try and address the specific needs of the mature worker, I chatted with serial
entrepreneur Jeff Winters – CEO of www.ourexperiencecounts.com.
Winters and several other mature workers found themselves together in the
outplacement arena and found that their needs were not being served. They
wanted more targeted offerings and created the service to, “serve as a learning and
mentoring hub by providing tools and social networking resources specific to the needs of the
experienced worker to turn their age and experience into an asset instead of a
liability – from maintaining to gaining new skill sets that will enable them to
become their own best career coach. “
The San
Jose, CA based company is brand new and already offers several free webinars on
topics such as, ”Understanding
Today’s Job Market”
and “A Winning Resume Does Not
Have to Cost a Fortune.” The ultimate goal of the service is to open the door to personal
career marketing opportunities for individuals and bring awareness to
employers as the job market picks up. Our
Experience Counts believes, “companies require the expertise and wisdom that
come with experience to develop and execute new or modified business plans. “ I
couldn’t agree more!
