Contrary
to popular belief, most people do not quit their jobs because
of money. While money may be a factor, it’s rarely the only or even the
most significant reason for leaving a job.
Research tells us that an employee doesn’t simply wake up one morning
and decide he or she is going to resign that day. Nor is it usually one event
that causes an individual to leave an organization.
The
decision to leave most frequently is the culmination of a series of experiences
that prompt people to disengage. The
research also indicates that
turnover is actually an evolutionary process by which employees gradually
discover what the organization is like and what kind of
relationship
they have with their manager, peers, etc.
They then make a choice accordingly to stay or leave.
The
decision to leave an organization is the result of many experiences, the final
one of which may be the “last straw” or the one that “pushes employees over the
edge.” The causes for resignation are actually the accumulation of experiences
over a period of time triggered by one or more recent events.
All
leaders must learn to coach to engage their people and to help them feel
honored and valued when they achieve the expected results. The culture must support and reinforce
learning from their mistakes and at the same time being held accountable for
high standards.
Any
manager who uses fear of failure as a motivating concept is living in the
dark ages and will ultimately receive his or her just desserts when people vote
with their feet to find the esteem they so greatly desire.
